The artwork "Thalia" was created as part of the Stencibility Festival in the summer of 2025 on the former Thalia video cinema building, located on the corner of Aleksandri and Aida streets in Karlova district in Tartu.
The infamous cinema, which operated in the 90s and was the first place in Tartu where you could rent VHS tapes and watch them on the spot, has now been unused for decades. Lithuanian street artist Pidžin decided to add life and color to the
neglected house. He found inspiration not only from the building's colorful history but also from the origin of the name "Thalia" - according to ancient Greek mythology, Thaleia is the daughter of Zeus, the protector of the muse and comedy.
The street art piece was in turn created into a silkscreen graphic based on the photograph, which shows the building itself with its historic sign (which is still on the building), as well as the goddess attached to the wall, flying cassettes, and the artist's author symbol, a pigeon.

PIDŽIN is one of Lithuania's most outstanding street artists. His work is characterized by sarcasm, irony, robust lines and bright colors. His characteristic cartoon-like style combines animation, street art and plywood cutouts. Pidžin considers himself an urban character – a city bird who leaves behind visual traces.
Pidžin's goal is to bring art out of its usual places and onto the streets, bringing it closer to people. He operates in Klaipėda, Lithuania in Artojas Street Art Park, of which he is the founder and curator. |
